In a housing estate right on the edge of Edinburgh’s city limits, there’s a pub that takes its name from the area's farming history.
Mid Yoken, which sits in the East Craigs area, sits on the site of an old steading which has long since disappeared. Long before the land was overtaken by housing, the area was once filled with rolling fields and pastures.
The steading was in the centre of the land, and was used by ploughmen and their horses to rest. They would exchange their horses, and yoke them - attaching two horses with a wooden cross piece for ploughing.
