The Edinburgh neighbourhoods deemed 'worst in Scotland for crime'

New government data shows Edinburgh’s most deprived and highest crime neighbourhoods, with the city centre among the areas to feature.

The data comes from the Government’s Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD), which measures seven different criteria including employment, health and crime. The index breaks Scotland down into different “datazones”, small postcodes that each have their own rankings across the seven criteria.

The 6,976 data zones each have a population of approximately 800 people and were the same zones used to track Covid infection rates throughout the pandemic. The SIMD reports are published every four years by the Scottish Government, reports the Scottish Daily Express.

In the most recent findings, Edinburgh had eight areas featured in the top 100 crime data zones in Scotland. Many of these high crime areas were in the city centre.

One of these areas, Market Street just outside Waverley Station, ranked as the sixth highest crime area in the country. Of the eight data zones featured, half were in the Princes Street and Old Town areas.

Leith Street came in next, ranking 13 on the crime list. Next The Cowgate comes in at number 26.

Dean Village also featured highly on the ranking at 33, followed by Tollcross at 36 and Wester Hailes at 39. The Old Town appeared just under the top 50 highest crime areas at 51 and the last area featured in the report’s top 100 was Craigmillar at 69.

Here are the eight worst Edinburgh areas for crime:

  • Market Street
  • Leith Street
  • The Cowgate
  • Dean Village
  • Tollcross
  • Wester Hailes
  • The Old Town
  • Craigmillar
