The Edinburgh ghost with an 'uneasy spirit' that lives in city's lesser known castle

The chilling tale of an Edinburgh ghost with an ‘uneasy spirit,’ ‘evil eyes’ and heavy riding boots with spurs has been rehashed just in time for Halloween.

According to Historic Environment Scotland, the ghost with spurs glides around the grounds of Craigmillar Castle, and isn’t particularly welcoming to mortal ghost hunters.

Reports claim the ghost with spurs is unfriendly towards the living, possessing evil eyes which “gleam menacingly on the approach of a mortal.”

The uneasy spirit reportedly haunts the castle grounds wearing a long, dark blue hooded cloak with a ‘mass of tangled black hair which falls over the forehead.’ The spirit also has heavy riding boots with spurs on his feet.

In 1934, the spectre was seen to be gliding over the fields in the shadow of Craigmillar Castle. The unearthly sight prompted vigilante ghost hunters to attempt to help lay the spirit to rest.

As the Niddrie ghosthunters moved in on the spirit, the spectre allegedly evaded capture by escaping through the ruins of the Craigmillar Castle.

Once again, a fresh ghost hunt was launched, with one of the men claiming to see “a shadowy being gliding round the ruins,” but the spirit allegedly escaped by vanishing through an old doorway.

Historic Environment Scotland retold the tale for Halloween, and sources claim the ghost with spurs was last seen on a side street leading from Peffermill Road to the castle. However, there have been no more sightings since.

The living identity of the ghost with spurs seems to be lost to history.
