Dementia is an umbrella term for a range of progressive disorders affecting the brain. Its impact can be physical, emotional, and psychological and can also profoundly change the practicalities of everyday life.
There are understood to be more than 200 subtypes of dementia but the most common are Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and mixed dementia. By 2025 it's estimated that in excess of one million people in the UK will have a diagnosis of dementia and almost all of us will know someone living with the condition.
Here Cheryl James, the area manager for Alzheimer's Society Cymru, explains some of the typical symptoms people with dementia experience as well as the importance of diagnosis and where they can turn for help.
