As the cast for Dancing With The Stars (DWTS) US was unveiled, it looked like a pretty straight-forward reveal of celebrities who will be competing on the reality TV show.. until fans noticed that one of the DWTS US stars, Anna Sorokin, was wearing an ankle monitor. God bless the USA.
With all 13 celebs and their professional dancing partners for Season 33 of DWTS US revealed on Wednesday morning’s episode of Good Morning America, some pretty huge names were dropped.
Olympic superstar Ilona Maher will be one of the contestants, as well as Real Housewives star Phaedra Parks — and POMMEL HORSE GUY!?!?!?
But one famous figure stood out like a big accessory where it shouldn’t be —and that accessory was the ankle monitor attached to the “fake heiress” Anna Sorokin.
So who is Anna Sorokin, and why is she famous — or should I say infamous?
Why is Anna Sorokin wearing an ankle monitor?
Anna Sorokin is a con artist who was convicted of fraud after she sucessfuly build a false reputation as a wealthy German heiress named Anna Delvey.
The 33-year-old used forged financial documents to pretend to be the heiress of a multi-million-euro trust fund, which she used to be granted large loans from banks without any collateral, and fund herself a life of luxury.
In April of 2019 she was found guilty on eight charges, including grand larceny in the second degree, attempted grand larceny, and theft of services.
Iconically, after her arrest she made one of the coldest, brat-coded statements of all time.
“I’d be lying to you and to everyone else and to myself if I said I was sorry for anything,” Anna Sorokin said.
She spent two years in prison, and in October of 2022 was released from prison, on the conditions that she wore an ankle monitor, remained on house-arrest, and did not use social media.
But I guess when there’s TV to be made, appearing on a celebrity dance show is allowed?
Sorokin grew into even more fame after Netflix produced a documentary on her crimes called Inventing Anna, which was based on the book My Friend Anna: The True Story of a Fake Heiress.
Honestly, her being on this show is WILD, because it is exactly like how Schapelle Corby appeared on the Australian version of the show.
Are we supposed to be dancing with stars, or with felons?
That said, if anyone knew how to blame it on the boogie… it was Schapelle.
