The Devil Wears Prada cast unlikely to reunite for sequel

Meryl Streep poses for a picture

During a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast at The 92nd Street Y in New York, Emily Blunt, along with the rest of The Devil Wears Prada cast, discussed the possibility of a sequel to the beloved 2006 film. Blunt, who played the character Emily in the movie, revealed that there has never been any real momentum in creating a sequel.

When asked about the potential for a sequel, the 40-year-old actress calmly shared that the cast is content without revisiting the iconic film. Blunt expressed her belief that certain things should be cherished and preserved in a bubble, and it's okay if a sequel is not made.

Blunt also reminisced about a funny comment made by her co-star Meryl Streep during a 2012 interview with Access Hollywood. Streep, who portrayed the formidable editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly, jokingly responded to the possibility of a sequel by saying, 'Sure, I mean, I'd have to lose the f------ weight, but I would do that, yeah.' It seems that Streep shares a similar sentiment to Blunt when it comes to the idea of a sequel.

For fans of The Devil Wears Prada, this news might come as a disappointment. The film, based on the 2003 novel by Lauren Weisberger, became a cultural phenomenon upon its release. It starred Anne Hathaway as Andy, a recent college graduate who lands a job at the prestigious fashion magazine Runway, working alongside Blunt's character, Emily. The film also earned Streep an Oscar nomination for her brilliant portrayal of the powerful Miranda Priestly.

While Blunt has expressed mixed emotions about the potential for a sequel in the past, she seemed more open to the idea during a 2018 interview. She mentioned that if everyone involved in the original film was on board, she would be up for it. However, she also voiced concerns about diluting the specialness of the original by creating a sequel.

Hathaway, on the other hand, has raised doubts regarding the need for a sequel, citing the significant changes the fashion industry has undergone since the film's release. She commented that the movie was set in a different era, emphasizing how everything has become more digital now. Despite this, Hathaway did suggest the possibility of rebooting the film with a new cast.

In 2021, director David Frankel revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the studio did not request a sequel. However, he shared that the filmmakers did have a meeting where they contemplated potential ideas. Ultimately, they felt that The Devil Wears Prada had told its story and decided against moving forward with a sequel.

While fans of The Devil Wears Prada may have hoped for a continuation of the beloved story, it appears that the cast and filmmakers have chosen to preserve the original film's legacy. Blunt, Streep, and Hathaway each have their own reasons for not pursuing a sequel, and it seems they are content with leaving the story as a standalone classic. For now, fans can still enjoy revisiting the world of Runway, cherishing the fashion, drama, and memorable performances that made the film so iconic.
