If you’re looking for somewhere a bit different to take the kids this October half term then Jodrell Bank is a place to consider. Located an hour’s drive away from Manchester in the heart of the Cheshire countryside, it's a place where both children and adults alike can learn about outer space.
Even if you’ve never been before, you’ll almost certainly recognise the impressive Lovell Telescope which dominates the Cheshire countryside. Completed in 1957, it remains one of the biggest and most powerful telescopes in the world - it can actually be seen from Beetham Tower on a clear day.
The Lovell Telescope tracked both Soviet and American space missions during the Space Race, while it also played a secret role during the Cold War as it was the only device in the UK that could detect long range missile attacks. There’s three other telescopes at the site, including the Mark II.

But there’s even more to discover at Jodrell Bank than just its telescopes. From engaging exhibits to talks which take you on a journey through space, there’s something for everyone.
Inside the Planet Pavilion is the Clockwork Orrery - a working model of the solar system. You can also learn about the history of Jodrell Bank at an exhibition in the First Light Pavilion.
Visitors can explore 35 acres of grounds at Jodrell Bank, which include an arboretum, picnic areas and a playground. Some of the picnic areas are sheltered too, perfect for unpredictable October weather.
Throughout October half term there are events going on including informative telescope talks; We Are Stars, an immersive show suitable for those aged five and over; and Meet The Expert - which gives you the chance to ask all your burning space questions.
Jodrell Bank is open from 10am until 5am. All the tickets are annual tickets so you can return to Jodrell Bank within 12 months. The prices are £12 for adults, £10 for concessions, £8 for children and free for kids under four.
