In a conference room in Zurich, deep in the bowels of IFAB HQ, one can only assume there sits a committee of beige administrators with clipboards whose sole task is to tweak the rules of football until it becomes an infuriating and almost unbearable spectacle for the match-going punter.
It is from here, for example, that VAR’s insidious influence has grown from a technological aid that might actually help officials in useful areas like offside calls or to determine whether a ball has crossed the line or not, into an all-consuming pest that has completely altered the matchday experience. And not for the better.
