Walking into the cool, soaring lobby of the Conservatorium hotel in Amsterdam, I wondered whether I had made a terrible mistake.
I eyed my three-year-old daughter, slightly sticky around the edges from the parade of snacks my husband and I had entertained her with on the four-and-a-half hour Eurostar journey, and then the acres of glass, the plush sofas, the chic guests sipping champagne, the — "Mummy! A bunny!" And sure enough, there it was: a bronze statue based on the beloved Dutch character Miffy. A sign that perhaps this blissfully calm space would welcome a 3ft ball of energy and pigtails after all.
