The Chromecast may be dead, but Samsung is rolling out Google Cast support to its TV line-ups for free

  • Samsung TVs old and new are now getting Google Cast support
  • It makes beaming content to the big screen much easier
  • The rollout may take some time to reach all of the eligible models

Google says we won't be seeing any more Chromecast dongles, but the Google Cast technology they used lives on — and Samsung has started rolling out support for it to select models launched in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

As spotted by Android Authority, the move means these TVs are no longer reliant on Samsung's own Smart View technology for beaming content to the big screen. It gives users much more flexibility, particularly those without Galaxy phones.

We had previously heard that Google Cast would be supported on all the new Samsung TVs for 2026, through the built in One UI Tizen software — models such as the Samsung S99H/S95H, for example — and now we know older sets are getting the upgrade too.

Exactly which older TVs are eligible isn't quite clear, but updates are popping up all over the web: over on Reddit one user is reporting that their Samsung S90D from 2024 has now got the functionality. However, a full rollout is likely to take a while.

Google Cast for all

We're hoping that all of Samsung's TVs launched over the last couple of years or so get the Google Cast feature. One of its advantages is how lightweight and simple it is, so there shouldn't be issues in terms of hardware capabilities.

As reported by FlatpanelsHD, Tizen update v2115 is the one to look out for. The article says the rollout is now "confirmed" for 2024, 2025, and 2026 models, though it doesn't mention TVs from 2023, which are referred to by Android Authority.

Google Cast is supported natively by the Google TV platform (used by manufacturers such as Sony), and by the webOS software that LG develops. It all means that Chromecast dongles aren't required — though you can still get the Google TV Streamer, of course.

If you're completely new to Google Cast, it's a standard way of streaming content over to a bigger TV screen, via integrated controls available in a multitude of Android and iOS apps, as well as the YouTube on the desktop and the Google Chrome browser.
