The Chase fans were left on the edge of their seats on Monday’s instalment of the ITV show, as one lone contestant went head-to-head with The Sinnerman in the final.
Former IT technician Alan, 62, faced off with ITV ’s Paul Sinha in the nail-biting final for £9,000 on the hit game show.
Alan managed to rack up 18 correct answers, which the Chaser Paul nearly reached, but with three seconds to spare he risked it all on a guess before host Bradley Walsh had finished reading the question.
This threw the question of 'What colour the stars on the Venezuelan flag are' to Alan, who correctly answered white after Paul had gambled on the colour being red, before Bradley read what the question referred to.
Alan looked to be near tears after cinching the win, as he said he planned to spend the cash on a cruise for him and his wife.
The Sinnerman replied by congratulating Alan and then said: “I had a feeling this wasn't going to end well for me and it turned out to be right.”
The Chase fans were ecstatic at home, with many taking to Twitter to congratulate underdog Alan, calling it “one of the best solo runs” on the show.
One fan wrote: “Legit crying for Alan. Look at his little face YES YES YES #TheChase.”
A second tweeted: “Absolutely brilliant win by Alan, supremely well played mate well done #thechase.”
A third wrote: “Wow!!!! Hugest congratulations Alan!!! That was phenomenal! 1vs1 and he beat @paulsinha ! What a brilliant team, pity they were knocked out! Wow! #TheChase” as another chimed in: “Well done Alan! Hero. Properly deserves every penny of that nine grand. What a performance. #TheChase.”
A fellow social media user wrote: “Well deserved Alan! So happy for you. He looked like he was going to breakdown in tears the entire time! So happy for him, seems like such a genuine guy. #TheChase.”
Another wrote: “Brilliant final chase there. Well played Alan #TheChase” as someone else tweeted: “I'm SO happy for Alan! He deserves that cruise..! #TheChase.”
Although Alan had started with teammates Amanda, 38, Paawan, 24 and Tom, 41, each were caught by Paul earlier in the programme.
But the team managed to rack up an impressive total of £30,000 in their cash builder rounds, marking only the sixth time such an amount had been reached in the show’s past decade on air.
Only five teams have done better in the last 10 years, each of them scoring £31,000 on the hit ITV game show.
But the Chaser caught three of the four members in the initial round despite their strong performance in the cash-builder.
Going into the final round of The Chase, Tom was the only man left standing after his teammates had each been caught by Paul and failed to make it back to safety.
