The Chase: Anne Hegerty faces self-proclaimed 'super-team' in nail-biting final chase

The Chase gave viewers a nail-biting final round, as Chaser Anne Hegerty took on a self-proclaimed "super-team" of quizzers. The episode, which aired on Thursday, July 7, saw contestants Rob, Dimitra, Fran and Steve take on 'The Governess'.

Following Anne's championing over Steve, just three players were left standing as the quizzers went into the final chase, playing for £17,000. It wasn't the strongest of rounds, as the trio only managed to score a total of 12 places ahead of the Chaser.

Before Anne answered her own questions, host Bradley Walsh told the quizzers: “We’ll need some pushbacks I think. And plenty of them.” 'The Governess' quipped back: “I think the pressure of knowing they’re meant to be a super-team may have got to them a little.”

The final chase was not the best for 'The Governess', who was pushed back after her very first question. Following a correct answer, the quizzers jumped forward a step in what Rob called a "lucky [13th]" place.

A pushback of 12 would usually be very easy for the Chaser, but Anne struggled in the episode and was knocked back four times. With a mere six seconds to spare, she was successful in wiping the team out.

Bradley explained: “Four attempts to push back, four executed. Well played. Caught with six seconds to go!” Shocked, the host added: “That, let me tell you, is only one more question!" “

"A win’s a win, Bradley! And I won," replied smug Chaser Anne, having championed over her competition. Bradley said: “Wow, I thought that was hard work and the team nearly got away with it. Caught with six seconds remaining. They go home empty-handed. That was close."

Viewers took to social media to express their disappointment for the quizzers. One person said: "Poor attempt today." Another person wrote: "Anne also did so s**t omg."

Perhaps best summing up the round, someone put: "THEY THINK IT'S ALL OVER. AND IT IS."

The Chase airs on weekdays on ITV at 5pm
