The cars most likely to be stolen in the UK

Car crime and the theft of vehicles is a problem across the UK no matter where you live. But statistics suggest that you may have more of a chance of becoming a victim of it if you own certain makes of cars. That's according to statistics obtained from the DVLA, which has revealed the most commonly stolen cars across the country.

The Government agency, which maintains a database of drivers and vehicles for the entire country, released figures to leasing comparison site LeaseLoco via a Freedom of Information request revealing that from January 1 until December 31, 2021, there were a whopping 48,493 vehicles reported stolen.

Unsurprisingly, one of the most commonly driven cars topped the list in the form of a Ford Fiesta, with 3,909 incidents. We reported how a red Ford Fiesta ST was stolen from the driveway of Sam Joseph in broad daylight on Friday, March 18. You can read more about that by clicking here. Also significantly high up on the list was the Land Rover Range Rover. There were 3,754 of such vehicles stolen over the course of the year. Another Ford vehicle that proved popular among thieves was its Focus cars, which were stolen 1,912 times. A cyclist recently spoke about the cars and drivers most likely to cut them up when they were riding their bike in Wales - you can read that article here.

The following is a list of the most commonly stolen cars for 2021:

Ford Fiesta 3,909
Land Rover Range Rover 3,754
Ford Focus 1,912
VW Golf 1,755
Mercedes-Benz C-Class 1,474
BMW 3 Series 1,464
Land Rover Discovery 1,260
Vauxhall Corsa 1,218
Vauxhall Astra 1,096
Mercedes-Benz E-Class 818

Chief executive of LeaseLoco, John Wilmot, said: “The Ford Fiesta may have lost its crown as the best-selling new car in the UK but it still retains the unenviable title as being the most stolen car in Britain. Close behind is the Range Rover, one of the most popular luxury SUVs on the market, which has been targeted by sophisticated criminal gangs who have the knowledge and keyless tech to gain entry.” Have you read about the eight things all drivers do which could result in a £100 fine.

We recently reported how motoring experts have warned that electric car charger thefts could rocket in the next decade. With replacement chargers costing up to £700, an increase in electric vehicles will make thefts more likely, according to automotive experts. You can read more about that by clicking here.
