Arizona Cardinals players have spoken and the captains for the 2024 season are quarterback Kyler Murray, running back James Conner, safety Budda Baker and linebacker Kyzir White.
Head coach Jonathan Gannon made the reveal Monday morning prior to the team being on the field for the first practice of Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills.
Gannon named six captains in his first season in 2023 and said, “I felt really good about the players picking them this year.”
He added, “There are a lot of good guys in that lover room; a lot of guys got votes. A lot of leadership, positive leadership in there with a bunch of different guys.”
The two additional captains last year were linebacker/special-teams standout Dennis Gardeck and tackle D.J. Humphries, who is no longer with the team. Gannon and said most weeks there will be a game captain or captains that will also be picked by the players and named Saturday night.
With no special-teams captain this year, that’s where some could land.
“That’s the way it just kinda kicked out, but there’s a bunch of leaders on special teams units,” Gannon said. “Those guys will be into game-captain roles. It doesn’t just have to be special teams, but that’s why I wouldn’t read too much into that.
“We have a lot of guys that pop off my mind that could be captains that got votes to be a captain. It’s just how we decided to do it, but there’s a lot of leadership in that locker room and they’ll act like captains.”
