Possibly one of Bristol’s only warm spaces to offer a cooked breakfast, The Port of Bristol Sports and Community Hub (PBA) claims that its full English is cheaper than anywhere else in the city. With the rising cost of living the average cooked breakfast in 2022 was 20 per cent higher than the previous year with the average ranging from £8.28 in Leeds and £13 in London.
At PBA in Shirehampton you can purchase a full English breakfast or a vegetarian alternative for as little as £3 on a Thursday or Friday morning. A standard tea or coffee is free of charge on any day of the week, thanks to Bristol City Council funding the community hub received as part of the warm spaces initiative.
But if you find yourself on Nibley Road in the north of the city on a Wednesday morning you won't have to pay a penny because the breakfast is served free for all with “no catches”. PBA chair, Dan Clifton, said the community group also organises free meals for school children in the holidays.

The huge venue is slightly tucked away and had previously been a members only club up until a few years ago, now the group is in the process of setting it up as a limited company and a charity. The bar helps fund the free and discounted meals which have been growing over the last year since Mr Clifton and a core group of volunteers took over. The hope is that they can try and tackle child poverty and isolation in Shirehampton, as well as surrounding areas like Southmead and Lawrence Weston.
Mr Clifton, a local dad and business owner who has lived in Shirehampton his whole life, wants people to know that PBA is now a family friendly place which is open to everyone. A few weeks ago funding came in from Feeding Bristol and several months ago the warm space was given financial support from Bristol City Council but up until that point the group was entirely self funded.
But thanks to the recent funding, PBA can now offer free breakfast every Wednesday, but the group is hoping to look at offering it on different days in future. Mr Clifton said: “We started giving away a free breakfast before any funding came in. I wanted to get people out who don’t go out, who can’t afford to go out.
“You can get free tea and instant coffee with your breakfast so you don’t feel obliged to buy anything. Our £3 breakfast is the cheapest in the city if not in the country. We are going to try out the free breakfast on a Saturday. It’s going to be carnage.”
You can purchase a full cooked breakfast (with a vegetarian option available) for £3 on a Thursday or Friday and free breakfasts are currently on a Wednesday. During school holidays PBA provides a free lunch and breakfast to any school age child. Check out the PBA Facebook page or website for more information.
