The Mormons landed at the Liverpool Empire Theatre this week and are here to stay until Saturday August 13.
Written by the creators of South Park (Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez) it's easy to assume that this production won't be a simple tale of the Mormon religion. It's far more offensive, risqué and satirically genius than that.
After being delayed for two years due to coronavirus, the greatly anticipated award-winning show has finally arrived, and wow, did it leave an impression. For a show that's won over 30 international awards, it's easy to see why this musical is so popular - but it's definitely not for everyone.

The Book of Mormon follows a group of Mormons who are sent to Africa on a mission to spread the word about their faith. With music and lyrics written by Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez embedded into the production, there's plenty of room for laughs, and the audience at the Liverpool Empire theatre certainly did that.
So, let's talk about the music, because it's surprisingly punchy to say the least. With camp choreography and upbeat tones from the opening song 'Hello!' it's easy to find yourself bobbing along to the music with a cheesy grin. As soon as the show starts, you know you're in for a generally entertaining night and not just a few giggles.
Lead role Elder Price (Robert Colvin) is paired up with the geeky yet charming Elder Cunningham (Jacob Yarlet) for their mission to Africa, and the relationship between the pair is awkwardly hilarious. Colvin is perfect at portraying the all American charm with just the right amount of sass and flair to deliver some really catchy musical numbers.
Jacob Yarlet, who's from Liverpool himself, does an absolutely phenomenal job as Elder Cunningham. His sheer talent is what makes Elder Cunningham so loveable, as his character develops throughout the show you're bound to be smiling along the way.
You've then got some more Mormons, already based in Africa, who are waiting for them there, including Elder McKinley played by Jordan Lee Davies who is an absolutely outstanding performer to say the least. Davies really knew how to get the crowd laughing with his undeniably infectious smile and spot on performance from singing to dancing.
The sheer power and range from the ensemble is unreal, particularly in the side-splittingly funny 'Turn It Off' song, that's all about keeping your inner feelings inside. Without giving too much away, this song is particularly memorable for me because of its damn right fabulous choreography and sass.
The costumes designed by Ann Roth are minimal yet effective for the Mormons, who have that really clean and preppy aesthetic and perfectly gelled hair. Each individual cast member has brilliant characterisation that actually makes you forget you're watching a musical, there's no room for boredom in this wacky and bright stage show - it's all about the laughs.
Without giving too much of the plot away, The Book of Mormon definitely doesn't leave a sour taste in your mouth towards Mormons in the end - quite the opposite. Just one word of advice though, I'd highly recommend researching the show before buying a ticket, because it's not for everyone.
Me though? Well, I thought it was utterly genius, a cleverly crafted performance featuring an insanely talented cast that makes two hours and 20 minutes of your night absolutely fly by. I'll be booking tickets to see this again.
There's still tickets available now - you can purchase them here.
