Because July 1 is the day in which the former New York Mets outfielder gets paid a cool $1.19 million by the franchise in deferred money — although he ALSO gets $500,000 from the Baltimore Orioles! — and everyone makes jokes.
But we like to remind you that there are others who get paid, both active players and some like Ken Griffey Jr. who are long retired.
So we decided to put together an All-Star team of star players who, like Bonilla and others, will get paid a lot after they’re done or are already making that money:
Catcher: J.T. Realmuto
He’ll get $5 million in 2026 and 2027 from the Phillies.
First Base: Freddie Freeman
Dude is getting a reported $57 million in deferred money from the Dodgers from 2028 through 2040.
Second Base: Dustin Pedroia
I couldn’t find an active second baseman with deferred money owed, so he makes the team with the $2 million he’ll make next year and the $2.5 million for the next four years after.
Shorstop: Francisco Lindor
He’s getting $5 million a year from 2032 to 2041 from the Mets.
Third Base: Rafael Devers
He’ll earn $75 million in deferred money until 2043.
Outfield: Mookie Betts
From 2033 to 2044, he’ll earn millions, per Spotrac!
Outfield: Christian Yelich
From 2031 to 2042, he’ll earn $2.3 million a year.
Outfield: Ken Griffey Jr.
Only one more year of deferred money left from his Reds contract!
Starting pitcher: Jacob deGrom
He’s no longer a Met, but he’s getting paid $52 million from 2035 to 2039 by the franchise.
