The Big Half 2024 – what roads will be closed for the London half marathon?

The Big Half 2024 will see 17,500 participants set off from Tower Bridge on the 13.1-mile half-marathon course, which finishes at the iconic Cutty Sark in Greenwich.

The day also includes The Big Mile – a free, fun, family-friendly mass participation event in Greenwich, and the New Balance Big Relay, a race for teams of four, where each participant takes on a 5K leg of the 13.1-mile course.

Now in its seventh year, The Big Half is expecting more people than ever to join in, whether that be from taking part or supporting those who are.

But with such a large event comes a lot of disruption.

Road closures will be in place throughout the day of the event, which is taking place on Sunday, September 1.

Organisers said: “Advance warning signs will be displayed in affected roads in the build-up to the event. Police officers and stewards will be present on the day to help answer your queries and to ensure a safe and secure event.

“Parking bays on the route will be suspended and residents are advised to relocate vehicles off the route prior to 4am on Sunday, 1 September. Vehicles left on the route will be relocated. If your vehicle is moved, please use the trace.london website to find it.

“Thank you for your support in helping to make The Big Half a fantastic event for our participants and the local community while raising thousands of pounds for charity.”

Here is all we know.

What roads are being closed?

13.1 miles of roads will be shut off to cars for the event, from the boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Southwark, Lewisham and Greenwich.

A full map of those roads affected can be found here.

Tower Hamlets

Road closures in this borough will last from 6am to 2pm.

Residents and businesses in Wapping will be affected as the route passes along the Highway between the start line and mile two and then returns via the Highway, Garnet Street, Wapping High Street, and Thomas More Street.

Residents and businesses in Limehouse and Westferry will be affected by the route as it passes through Westferry Road, Limehouse Causeway, and Narrow Street.

Five vehicle crossing points within the road closures will operate throughout the day in the borough to allow access. The vehicle crossing points will be closed during the times listed below to allow runners to pass safely.

The vehicle crossing points are:

Residents and businesses in Lewisham will be affected by the route as it passes through Lower Road and Evelyn Street between miles 11 and 12. There are three vehicle crossing points within Lewisham to give residents who live north of the event route access.

Road closures will last from 6am until 3pm.

Vehicle crossing points in this borough will be:

Greenwich

Residents and businesses in Creek Road and north of Creek Road will be affected by the route as it approaches the Finish Line at Cutty Sark. To improve access and to assist residents while road closures are in place, two vehicle crossing points will operate when it is safe to do so, between Creekside and Gonson Street and Norman Road and Norway Street. These will both be closed for runners between 8.55am to 3.15pm.

Greenwich town centre will be closed to traffic from 6am to 4pm although a local bus service will be maintained on Romney Road, Nelson Road, and Greenwich High Road throughout the day.
