Improving public transport, housing the homeless, tackling poverty and delivering leisure and tourism developments are some of the things that the council will be looking to do in Merthyr Tydfil over the next five years. Recently elected council leader Geraint Thomas has set out how the local authority will deal with the challenges it faces and take advantage of the opportunities it has over the next few years.
Cllr Thomas, independent, was elected following a split vote at the annual general meeting with the independent mayor casting his vote in his favour. It followed a council election in May which saw 15 independent councillors and 15 Labour councillors elected.
Cllr Thomas takes over from Councillor Lisa Mytton, independent, who served as leader before the election and was also re-elected as a councillor but decided to stand down.
