The best upcoming VFX films of 2024

A young woman riding a horse.

We've seen the release of several visual masterpieces this year, most notably Dune: Part Two, and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. But 2024 isn’t done with us yet; there are still several upcoming features that promise spectacular VFX. To understand what goes into this kind of work read our feature on making Ridley Scott's Napoleon or our deep dive into the VFX behind The Creator.

Out on Christmas Day, Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu features suitably gruesome VFX created by BlueBolt and Atomic Arts. Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, with VFX from MPC and The Third Floor, another of our top picks.

If you want to work in VFX then take a look at our tutorials for Cinema 4D, as well as our explainers for core CG platforms Houdini and Unreal Engine 5. But whatever you’re into, whether you're an aspiring VFX artist or film lover, you’ll find some exciting movies to look forward to for the colder months that are best experienced on the big screen. Read on to get some useful dates for your diary. Come back too, as I'll be updating this regularly with new VFX movies.

Nosferatu, December 25, 2024

Director Robert Eggers has been trying to make this film a reality for almost a decade, and now it’s finally here. It’s a remake of the 1922 German film of the same name, and stars Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, a vampire infatuated with a young woman, Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp). BlueBolt and Atomic Arts provided VFX for the gore and other mayhem in this grisly, gothic horror.
