The best places in Scotland to eat 'alfresco' named in UK wide list

With the warmer weather comes the chance to eat and drink outside, enjoying the fresh air, sunshine and of course wonderful views while you chomp down on some delicious dishes. And although Scotland might not always be blessed with the best weather, we do have some incredible places to eat.

With that in mind, The Times has just named the 26 courtyards, rooftop gardens and elegant terraces around the UK they recommend for people looking for a top spot for some alfresco dining.

And three top locations in Scotland have made the list, with two in the capital and one in Stirling being named by food and travel writer Andy Lynes as the places to go.

Timberyard, Edinburgh

Speaking about this uber-cool urban eatery, Andy wrote: "Step into the cool, calming urban oasis of the grey-stone courtyard at this converted warehouse just off the Royal Mile and close to Edinburgh Castle.

"The menu at the stylish, family-run restaurant makes the most of the finest seasonal Scottish produce — some grown in the restaurant’s raised beds — in dishes such as pigeon with lardo, morels and chestnut mostarda."

Nick’s at Port of Menteith Stirling, Stirlingshire

The next on the list is top TV chef's Nick Nairn's excellent eatery, with Andy adding: "The chef Nick Nairn has opened up the beautiful kitchen garden at his restaurant and cookery school set in stunning Stirlingshire countryside.

"Dine on the terrace underneath vine-covered pergolas sur- rounded by foliage and flower and vegeta- ble beds, where the menu might include linguine made with the daily catch from the north coast of Scotland and a selection of handmade pizzas."

Cold Town House Edinburgh, Lothian

The second entry for the capital is newcomer Cold Town House, with Andy writing: "There are spectacular views of Edinburgh Castle from this award-winning city centre rooftop terrace in Edinburgh’s historic Grassmarket, complete with pergola, floral canopy and a vintage van converted into a bar. The casual dining menu includes a range of hand- made pizzas and craft beers brewed on site."
