Celebrating its 20th year, Green Man Festival sure went off with a bang as a pick ‘n’ mix of eclectic music, comedy, fun and science washed over the Brecon Beacons at Glanusk Park once more.
Thousands of music lovers and camping aficionados immersed themselves in a weekend, or week, of new and old, whether it be bands and acts, friends or the festival staple, a sequinned outfit. The Green Man itself, built and burned every year was a sky-facing archer, ready to fire all the good wishes and messages of hope into the ether and was a stunning focal point for festival meet-ups and exploration.
Newer acts like the blistering electro dance act, Bicep, sat field to field with established names like Kraftwerk, Metronomy and Scottish indie rockers Arab Strap.
Special guests, desert rock band Imarhan, introduced by Gruff Rhys, were kept anonymous from the crowd until their Sunday afternoon set, while the anniversary celebrations continued with a special joint parade with the LGBT+ community as Pride also celebrates a big birthday this year - 50.
Oscar nominee, Jessie Buckley showcased her new album with former Suede guitarist, Bernard Butler in the Walled Garden on Friday evening and that intimate performance area also saw cracking sets from indie rock singer, Torres and Ural Thomas and the Pain - a real must for those with a penchant for upbeat funk.
Carwyn Ellis and Rio 18 with the National Orchestra of Wales was a dreamy, dancy, sublime way of opening the final day, Sunday, on the now iconic Mountain Stage, which will be closed by Mercury-prize winner, Michael Kiwanuka. There’s so much going on we couldn’t fit it all into one photo gallery, but safe to say that if Green Man’s next 20 years are half as good as the first 20, in terms of line-up, community and sheer good times, then bring it on.
