The unassuming Edinburgh curry house that's welcomed royals and celebrities

One of Edinburgh's most popular Indian restaurants, which has been visited by some big names over the years, is hoping to take home some recognition from the Scottish Curry Awards.

Just last year, they celebrated 37 years of service. Shahid Ghani, who is now at the helm of the company, took over from his grandfather Abdul Ghani who turns 81-years-old this year.

Since launching a restaurant in Glasgow in the '70s, the family now runs restaurants across Scotland including in Perth and Aberdeenshire.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live , Shahid told us: "We originally started back in the '70s in Glasgow. We're now in the fourth generation, myself.

"We've got a great management team and I think that's what our success has came from. We've had people like Cliff Richard, Rod Stewart, Kevin Bridges, Billy Connolly - we've seen it all.

"At this point, we like to think we're a bit of an Edinburgh institution."

Shahid said the family likes to keep it quiet, but they've even delivered to Holyrood Palace. Speaking on keeping the business going, Mr Ghani said: "We're not far from Edinburgh Playhouse, St James Quarter and the city centre so we do keep busy.

"After the pandemic, it's been tough for all restaurants but we've bounced back and now we're up for two awards. One is Best in Edinburgh, and there's another for our General Manager.

"The awards are on May 2 in Glasgow and we're all really looking forward to it. It's the hard work of the staff and all the stuff going on behind the scenes that I'm proud of."

Mr Ghani also thinks their long-standing popularity is down to regular customers who show support. Should they win at the Scottish Curry Awards, he says they'll be thanking them too.

He added: "The main thing about these awards is for my staff to get the recognition they deserve. Everybody works so hard."
