The areas Rangers must strengthen as Ibrox hero urges caution over new recruits

Rangers need to be careful who they bring in the door this summer, warns Mark Hateley.

The former Light Blues striker has highlighted the four areas he thinks the Ibrox hierarchy should be targeting.

Philippe Clement is expected to oversee a significant squad rebuild during the close-season and an array of experienced players have already been released following their contract expiries.

That list included the likes of John Lundstram, Borna Barisic, Ryan Jack and Kemar Roofe with more likely to follow suit.

That means quality signings are required if Rangers want to regain the Scottish Premiership title off Celtic, and Hateley thinks the recruitment team should proceed with caution in their search for the right acquisitions.

“Yeah, I think all those sort of players will be in the thinking," he told BettingSites, when asked if Aberdeen's Bojan Miovski and PFA Player of the Year, Lawrence Shankland, should be lured to Glasgow.

"I think it’s key areas again. When you’re looking for an overall rebuild and a different structure, going forward, it needs to be all levels through the football club. Academy director and obviously recruitment. It’s the centre half, central midfield, providers and goal scorers.

“Miovski and Shankland, they all fit into that group. Obviously they score goals at this level, which is important, but you’ve got to be careful of what you bring in. Because I think invariably you’re looking at the domestic league of, you know, being able to negotiate your way and navigate your way through that league.

“It’s the European situation that you’ve got too, so you’ve got to look for players that have got to be able to go to that level and at that level, I think you’re looking at a different price bracket. So that’s where we are right now at Rangers. I don’t know how much money we have to spend and what sort of quality we can pick up.”
