'The apocalypse is coming': Outrage over PoundBakery raising prices above a pound

People in Greater Manchester have been sharing their dismay after discovering that PoundBakery has put up prices for some of its most popular products…to above a pound.

Customers at the popular bakery spot, which first started life in Bolton back in 2010, this week have made the shocking discovery that the cost of the shop’s baked goods, such as cakes and sausage rolls, now cost more than the famed £1.

Taking to Reddit, one person said they visited the PoundBakery branch in Stockport and saw the price of sausage rolls rise from £1 to £1.20. They posted: “I was in for a nasty shock this morning when ordering my sausage rolls from the pound bakery."

“They had gone up from £1.00 to £1.20 with no warning...," they added. Concluding their upset, the Reddit user quipped: “RIP Pound Bakery.”

In response to the post, others chimed in to share their upset. One simply wrote: “The apocalypse is coming."

Another posted: “But it’s the POUND Bakery?! Can we not dob them in to trading standards for false advertising or something?" In response, one person jokingly suggested: "I smell a rebrand “Poundish bakery."

Despite the increases, many customers at PoundBakery, which now boasts more than 100 stores across the UK, said they still prefer its products over some of its rivals.

Outside the branch at Salford Prescinct today (July 15), many customers didn’t seem too fazed by the price hikes. Emma Kenzitt, 25, said: “It’s cheaper than any other places really. It’s cheaper than Greggs. I prefer Poundbakery, it’s nicer than Greggs.

“I walked past someone with their pasty and I needed something - pregnancy craving.”

Anita Rajput, 56, added: “The prices are not too bad. We prefer to come here, it’s better than Greggs. Greggs is very expensive.”

In fact, some customers even believe the price increase could have led to an improvement in product quality.

Anthony Dowson, 33, who bought a cheese and onion slice from the Salford store, said: “It used to be two for £1 but now it’s just one for £1. But it used to be smaller and they’ve got bigger.

"The quality of food has gone up now. The sausage rolls used to be hanging but now they’re dead nice. They offer more variety, a meal deal for £2. At Greggs it’s over £3.”

In response to a comment on Facebook earlier this week about the prices of PoundBakery's latest breakfast menu being over a pound, the bakery replied: "The concept of Poundbakery is that we give you more for your Pound." The spokesperson added: "We are doing what we can to move with the times, to continue in providing better value than our competitors."

PoundBakery have been approached by the M.E.N for a comment on the price increases.
