The Body Becomes the Message
Sindoor does not come off easily. It stains the parting of the hair, settles into the skin, and has to be deliberately, consciously removed. That effort is the point. During Pitru Paksha, the sixteen-day period in the Hindu lunar calendar when the living perform rites for their departed ancestors, the removal of adornments is not an afterthought or a superstition passed down without meaning. It is a bodily grammar, a way of saying, through the surface of the self, that grief is present and that the house is in a particular kind of time.
