The 7 transfers Newcastle United could revisit in January

Newcastle United have been linked with a whole host of top European talent following on from the takeover last year. The club have recruited well so far with the previous January transfer window a huge factor in their bid for Premier League survival last season.

Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Matt Targett, Bruno Guimaraes and Chris Wood all played their part in transforming the Magpies from relegation certs into a mid-table outfit with an eye on the top-half. The recent additions of Sven Botman, Nick Pope and Alexander Isak is another step towards rebuilding the squad with European football the long-term aim.

There were plenty more players linked with the club where moves didn't come fruition. With that in mind, ChronicleLive has taken a look at who Newcastle United could look to bring in during the winter transfer window.

James Maddison and Youri Tielemans are two players that have played huge parts in Leicester City's success in recent years, but both were linked with moves to Tyneside. The Foxes rejected two approaches from Newcastle for the one-time England international while an unknown club made a late bid to sign Tielemans.

The latter of the two is coming towards the end of his contract and has been linked with the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City. The Belgian was reportedly available for a fee in the region of £25million, but no club was able to agree a deal with Brendan Rodgers' side, a surprise given the reported asking price.

Both players would add considerable strength in depth to the Magpies squad and are ones to watch moving forward. Moussa Diaby is another of Europe's emerging talents to be linked with a move to St. James' Park.

Neither Newcastle of Bayer Leverkusen were able to agree a fee for the French international, with the Magpies unwilling to 'overpay' for players. The reported £60million asking price was a bridge too far for the Toon hierarchy.

A cheaper alternative - one that emerged later in the window - is Joao Pedro of Watford. Newcastle had two bids knocked back for the young Brazilian who remains hopeful of playing in the Premier League once more.

Alexander Isak's arrival could halt that move in it's tracks, but still deemed as one for the future, Pedro is capable of playing across the front three and the club are still hoping to improve the wide areas of the squad. Jack Harrison is someone that Newcastle were linked with and had bids rejected for.

His fine start to the season only showing why the Magpies were keen on bringing him to Tyneside, talk of an England call-up is only going to drive up a potential fee. Speaking of England internationals, Connor Gallagher is someone who was also on Newcastle's radar, according to reports.

The Blues midfielder enjoyed a stellar campaign with Crystal Palace and has featured for Chelsea's first-team since returning this season. Graham Potter's arrival at Stamford Bridge could put a halt to any move for Gallagher, Christian Pulisic and Armando Broja, with the former Brighton boss expected to grant the trio a clean slate.

There's plenty of time between now and the January transfer window opening, but the aforementioned players are ones to keep an eye on.
