The 5 best fish and chip shops in Dundee, according to our readers

Did you know there are nearly 400 million meals ordered from fish and chip shops across the UK every year?

And Dundee Live reckons at least half of those must be in the City of Discovery.

This is partly down to the huge amount of amazing family run chippers in Tayside's communities, but also the overwhelming response to our super-scientific online questionnaire last week.

We asked the four main community Facebook pages what their members’ favourite chip shop was and you didn’t disappoint.

A weekend of tallying nearly two hundred responses from meh Dundee, Braw Dundee, From Dundee and Proud and the Broughty Ferry community page later, and we have a clear winner.

Importantly we also have some amazing runners up and very worthy mentions.

It’s not the most scientific market research, we know, but it’s not a bad gauge of where you’re guaranteed to get a gut-busting pile of super-tasty, cooked-while-you-wait, fish and chips, in Dundee or Brought Ferry.

One thing’s for certain, with nearly 20 different chip shops mentioned in our survey - Dundee locals have a huge selection of brilliant, family-run chip chops to choose from.

First up are our honourable mentions:

They include The Bridge on Logie Street , in Lochee, that Kelly and KConnell love.

They said: “The bridge chips are nice and fresh - the chips are amazing when you get delivery food is always really hot batter is nice and crispy.”

The Tailend in the Nethergate also makes this list with delighted customer Ally MacDougall telling us: “A good chippy has always got to have the batter spot on. Its always good quality and perfect batter.”

Another in this section is Tonys near Happyhillock Road which had a number of mentions including from Jane McGrath who said: “Tonys happyhillock best steak pies in town , no grease taste great.”

The last chipper to get a shout out here is The Steeple Fish Bar in Fintry which is a favourite of local woman, Denise Laurie.

She told us: “The fish is lovely, the batter crispy, I'm not one for "chippy chips" but they are delicious , mostly get deliveries from them & it's always quick & piping hot when it comes.”

We now get to our top five chippers in Dundee - in reverse order as voted by locals they are:

Feel free to drop us a line with any other recommendations and we’ll happily give them a shout-out.

This is because there’s nothing like a steaming hot fish supper to sort you out on a Friday or Saturday night.

And Dundee is very lucky to be home to over 20 of these fantastic, family run fast-food shops that have all built up loyal local followings.

Long may they continue - in cod, batter and mushy peas we trust!
