When it comes to the elite world of big philanthropy, large sums of money often come with equally large amounts of fanfare. In such cases, one is accustomed to seeing the name of a billionaire carved into the marble wings of some museum in the heart of a metropolitan area or a college campus. However, towards the beginning of 2021, something rather unprecedented started to spread around the town of Yarmouth in Nova Scotia.
The story started with the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation announcing its receipt of an amazing 22-million-dollar donation. This amount was simply unimaginable by the yardstick of a regional community. Indeed, it was the biggest single donation the foundation has ever received, but the anonymous donor did not want any publicity whatsoever. No press conference and no donor’s name on any new wings of the hospital could be expected. As it follows from the Annual Impact Report of the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation, the donor's main concern was ensuring that the donation would be used for the benefit of the patients of the Yarmouth Regional Hospital.
