Today we publish the third part of our 2023 Top 500 East Midlands companies list – taking in numbers 200 down to 21. This part of the list includes some of best known companies in the UK, companies such as Capital One, Experian, Vaillant Group, Games Workshop and Availablecar.com.
Between them the 180 companies on the list – ranging in turnover from £65.4 million up to £586 million – support tens of thousands of jobs and pump billions of pounds into the regional and national economies. We will be revealing the Top 20 at a breakfast event taking place at the Leonardo Hotel, East Midlands Airport, tomorrow morning (June 30) prior to their publication online.
This is the fourth year that we have published the list, which has been put together by De Montfort University Professor of Enterprise Prof David Rae, in a partnership between the business schools at the De Montfort, Derby and Nottingham Trent universities, supported by East Midlands Chamber.
This year our rundown is sponsored by NatWest Group and Leicester property developer and landlord Bradgate Estates.
Scott Knowles, the chief executive of East Midlands Chamber, said the list – which uses Companies House accounts covering July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021 – had been produced in a relatively stable trading environment when it launched back in 2020.
Since then, industry has faced challenges on a scale never previously experienced – from Covid-19 closures through to a stop-start economy and a cost-of-doing-business crisis that drags on today.
He said: “This fourth edition of the EM Top 500 reflects the impact of the pandemic and provides a clear picture of its lingering effects on our economy.
“But it also demonstrates something we’ve always known – the East Midlands business community has tremendous resilience, innovation and creativity, which has never shone brighter than throughout this deeply troubling period to minimise the negative effects.
“While the furlough scheme helped many, the fact that the EM Top 500 workforce declined by 7.5 per cent with a 9.3 per cent drop in overall turnover also indicates our firms’ determination to support their people and carry on as normally as possible.”
