The 20 Leeds schools told they need to improve by Ofsted

Across every school in Leeds, Ofsted inspectors make the rounds to see just how well they are performing. Following an in-depth inspection process, schools are then graded as either outstanding, good, requires improvement or inadequate.

Those that require improvement or are inadequate have been found to be lacking in certain areas by inspectors. This can often be the quality of teaching and assessment, how well pupils are progressing and the teacher's knowledge of curriculum subjects.

Schools can change quite wildly between inspections, with some plummeting from outstanding to requiring improvement within the space of one Ofsted visit.

We have put together a list of all the schools in Leeds that are deemed to be requiring improvement, in total there are 20 schools in Leeds and they are listed below. The full reports for each school can viewed on the GOV.UK website.

Allerton Bywater Primary School

Allerton Bywater Primary School (Google)

The overall effectiveness of this school requires improvement. The quality of teaching and learning in key stages one and two needs to build pupil’s knowledge and outcomes need to be worked on.

Bishop Young Church of England Academy

This school was given a rating of ‘Requires Improvement’ in September 2021. The school has been told it needs to have a better curriculum and pupil attendance levels can be too low. Leaders have also been told that the necessary checks are made when recruiting new staff members.

Co-Op Academy Leeds

Co-op Academy Leeds (Google)

This school was inspected in January 2019. Inspectors found that while the quality of teaching had improved some teachers do not use assessment information accurately to set challenges.

The school also fell down in literacy skills and absence issues.

Co-op Academy Oakwood

In 2015 this school was rated good but in a July 2019 inspection it fell to requiring improvement. School leaders were told that teaching, learning and assessment in the school was not consistently good.

The school also failed to insist on consistently high standards of pupil’s presentation leading to variable handwriting quality and common errors.

Co-op Academy Priesthorpe

This school was inspected in March 2020. The quality of the curriculum was criticised including history and geography. The school also found that disadvantaged pupils were more like to be absent from the school and pupil learning is disrupted by poor behaviour.

The Farnley Academy

The Farnley Academy (Google)

The Farnley Academy was rated outstanding in a 2013 inspection but during a 2019 inspection it fell to requires improvement. The school fell down in areas such as behaviour and attitudes and leadership and management.

Some pupils were found to be isolated from lessons too often because of their behaviour.

Hovingham Primary School

Hovingham has jumped between requires improvement and good over the years. Their 2016 inspection saw them at a good level but they have since dropped to requires improvement.

The school was picked up on their quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, early years provision and leadership and management.

Ingram Road Primary School

Ingram Road was previously given two requires improvement ratings in 2017 and 2020. Ofsted said that leaders were not ambitious enough in their expectations of what pupils achieve and plans for teaching wider curriculum subjects were not complete.

Kippax Ash Tree Primary School

Kippax Ash Tree was picked up on unambitious planning for subjects in the wider curriculum and assessment being ineffective.

School curriculum leaders were also told they did not have a deep enough understanding of the subjects they lead.

Kippax Greenfield Primary School

This school was rated requiring improvement in June 2019. The school was found to not have taken effective action to address the decline in pupils’ outcomes and expectations of what pupils can achieve are often too low. They was also found to be limited opportunities for pupils to practice numeracy and literacy skills.

Little London Community Primary School

Little London Community Primary School (Google)

Little London was a good school in 2014 but in their inspection in November 2018 they were dropped down. The school was found to be lacking in their assessment of pupils and students were seen to be making less progress within the school.

The quality of the teaching was also found to be not consistently good and too few children leave reception ready for learning in year one.

Outlon Primary School

Oulton Primary originally received a good rating in 2014 but dropped during their review in January 2019. Ofsted found that pupils were not making enough progress, teachers’ use of assessment information to be variable and errors were not being spotted.

Park View Primary Academy

This school was found to be requiring improvement in January 2019. It originally had a good rating in 2014. Current pupils progress in reading and writing was not consistently good and some teachers lack the knowledge within their subject fields to plan sequences of learning.

Primrose Lane Primary School

Primrose Lane was given a requires improvement rating in 2019 having been outstanding at their previous date of inspection. The school was told to improve learning plans for pupils with SEND and quality of pupils’ handwriting and presentation skills across the school.

Sharp Lane Primary School

This school was given a requires improvement rating in 2019. The school was found to be good across almost aspects except the quality of education.

Phonics teaching was found to not be strong enough in early years groups and pupils needed more planning in place to challenge them and make them think more deeply about history, geography and mathematics.

Spring Bank Primary School

In 2017, Spring Bank was rated as requiring improvement and in 2021 it was ranked the same. The school fell down in its quality of education, leadership and management and early years provision.

Some curriculums were found to be poorly planned and school leaders did not have a good enough understanding of the quality of the curriculums or pupils’ achievements.

St John’s Catholic Specialist School, Boston Spa

This school was rated requiring improvement in 2020. The school was found to be lacking in areas such as knowledge and skills pupils should achieve through the curriculum and also leaders not ensuring that some aspects of reading are taught effectively.

University Technical College Leeds

University Technical College Leeds (Google)

As of March 2019 this school was rated as requiring improvement. The school was criticised for its quality of teaching not being consistent and some teachers not displaying correct subject knowledge or following assessment plans.

Victoria Primary Academy

Victoria Primary Academy had its first inspection after converting to an academy in 2019 where Ofsted rated it as requiring improvement. The school was picked up on considerable staffing disruptions causing a negative impact on the school’s effectiveness and teachers not using assessment information consistently well to ensure pupils are given tasks that meet their varying needs.

Woodlesford Primary School

Woodlesford has gone from outstanding to good and now to requiring improvement following their most recent inspection in 2019. Ofsted found that Woodlesford Primary leaders did not act swiftly enough to ensure that the quality of teaching, learning and assessment is at least consistently good.
