The £15 viral beauty product that leaves my skin looking like a real-life flawless filter

I’m often very sceptical of products that go viral on TikTok, because it’s far too easy for results to be manipulated through intelligent lighting and filters. However, one recently hyped product has fast become a non-negotiable part of my beauty routine and makes my skin look flawless.

The hashtag #trigwellpowderpuff has amassed a whopping 7.1million views on the video sharing platform, many of which show beauty fans sharing before and after results after using Trigwell Cosmetic’s powder puff.

Now, unlike many viral beauty buys, this isn’t actually a makeup product that promises to blur the skin like the IRL Filter Foundation, or No7 Wrinkle Filler. Instead, it’s an applicator that works with any translucent powder to make your skin look soft, smoothed and poreless.

The viral "TikTok made me buy it" product was launched by founder Zoe Trigwell in 2022, after she used the last of her savings to start the makeup business in lockdown. Since launching the microfibre powder puff over a year ago, her once-small business went viral leading to thousands of orders overnight, expanding to a team of seven workers, and is now stocked at major retailers like Beauty Bay.

Trigwell Cosmetics' powder puff is even used and recommended by the likes of US music star Lizzo's makeup artist and has been named by fans as a “miracle product” after leaving users feeling airbrushed.

I’ve been using the powder puff for several months now, and love the way it makes my skin look - and to celebrate its success, it’s now available in some brand new limited edition colours for spring, including yellow, orange, and light blue.

Naturally, I have quite oily skin, so I’ve long been on a mission to find makeup products that work in unison together, from primers and foundations, to powders and concealers. And I think I’ve finally found a combination that works for me - and it’s all down to the Trigwell powder puff.

I like a pretty matte finish to my base makeup, because it helps control the shine on my skin throughout the day, but I do like a bit of a glow in certain areas. I found the BPerfect Chroma Luminous foundation to be a lovely dewy foundation, but I still craved that matte finish under my eyes and on my forehead.

Enter the Trigwell powder puff. Priced at £14.99 for a large and mini powder puff, this beauty tool provides a shine free, flawless finish while minimising the appearance of pores.

And it really is all the work of the puff, rather than the powder you use, too. To prove it, I used the Aldi Lacura translucent powder, which costs around £5. After applying my base, I press the puff into the powder and pat it gently on the back of my hand to remove the excess, before patting it onto my face to set my makeup.

Immediately, the skin looks blurred, texture is gone, pores are almost non-existent - it’s almost as if watching a magic trick before your very eyes.

You can see when I have applied powder to only half of my face with the puff that fine lines are softened, dark circles are concealed, and when I smile, the creases beneath my eyes are much less noticeable.

The teardrop point of the powder puff offers precision and maximum coverage, designed to fit into all contours of the face. The wider surface area of the powder puff is perfect to set and blend larger areas of the face, but I do tend to favour the smaller of the two products personally.

And I’m not the only one who thinks it lives up to the hype, after the product racked up hundreds of five-star reviews online. One said: “I stopped using loose setting powder for ages then got drawn in again with all the social media hype around the powder puff phenomenon! I have to say, I love the combo! I use it around my T-Zone and lightly under my eyes and the lasting power is fantastic. I have tried other powder puffs but this is by far the best in terms of quality and results.”

Another added: “Wasn’t sure if I believed what I saw on TikTok but it’s true. This puff blurs the skin beautifully. It doesn’t apply heavily or cakey, it’s honestly perfect.”

While a third wrote: “Just what I've been looking for, nothing I have used before has given the coverage that these powder puffs give. So easy to clean too!”

Its positive reviews far outweigh the negatives, however, not everyone was impressed with their own results, with one customer commenting: “The actual powder puff is beautifully soft & I love everything about it. Maybe I'm not using the best powder for it, but also I think it is probably the fact that it has an enormous task to make my under eye area seamless.

“I'm 53 years old with a rather wrinkly under eye area. If anyone can give me any suggestions to remedy this I would be most grateful.”

I have to say that the puff isn’t going to miraculously make you look 10 years younger in seconds, however, I’ve found that when trialling it with different products, when you find a combination that compliments one another, it makes a huge difference to your skin. I find that it works better with hydrating primers over ‘sticky’ ones - which are yet another TikTok trend, and sits better on a dewy foundation rather than matte, but it is a bit of a trial and error when it comes to what will work with your own skin, as each person’s routine will be individual to them.

But I have to say I was seriously impressed with the Trigwell Cosmetics powder puff and the results it gave me - particularly under my eyes - and I adore the new spring colours. You can shop the Trigwell Cosmetics powder puffs on the brands website, or here on Beauty Bay.
