The 15 hymns sung at Glasgow school assemblies including those everyone will remember

Sitting cross legged learning the latest hymn in school is a distant memory for some but there's no doubt you'll remember some words - if not all - to these popular anthems.

Everyone would sit side by side with their books open eagerly waiting for the teacher to start playing the piano. It was a scene in most Scottish primary schools.

It still unites people today whether to laugh or celebrate their childhood, the Record reports.

It might have been 10, 20 or 30 years since you were last at school but we are sure you'll remember some of these hymns (and know every word). And while it has been several years since we've been at school, singing hymns is still as popular today in many Scots primaries.

There is no need for a projector, and sitting cross legged on the floor while you read this is optional.

He's Got The Whole World in His Hands

This one was a firm favourite in most Scottish schools.

Memorable lyrics include: "He's got my brothers and my sisters in his hands," and "He's got the rivers and the mountains in His hands, He's got the oceans and the seas in His hands.". A classic.

Give Me Oil In My Lamp

Or as you'll probably know it 'Sing Hosanna'.

Like all the others on our list, this hymn has a chorus that once it's in your head, you'll struggle to get it out.

Remember singing about wanting oil in your lamp to keep you burning, praising, loving and serving? Or some may remember it as 'Give me joy in my heart, keep me praising'.

Colours of Day

Another song which might not be instantly recognisable from its title, but by the time the chorus kicks in, you'll probably be able to sing it word for word.

If we gave you the line "so light up the fire and let the flame burn," we reckon you'd be able to sing the rest and if we added "open the door, let Jesus return," you'll definitely know which hymn we're on about.

Shine Jesus Shine

Arguably more of a song than a hymn, this one has quite possibly the most anthemic chorus of the lot. Slowly building through the verse it bursts into "Shine, Jesus, shine. Fill this land with the Father's glory. Blaze, Spirit, blaze. Set our hearts on fire," and all of a sudden we're back at school again.

All Things Bright and Beautiful

The hymn was first published in 1848 in Mrs Cecil Alexander's Hymns for Little Children and is still sung across the world today.

Kumbaya My Lord

Whether it's someone singing lord or someone crying lord, we all know the words to this one.

Morning Has Broken

While not quite as upbeat as some of the other anthems on the list, this is still very much a classic and one we've definitely all sang at some point.

This Little Light of Mine

A classic you can't help but smile while singing - Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Sing it in the Valleys

'Shout it from the mountain tops', enough said really.

Our God Reigns

I don't think anyone can fully remember any of the verses but with a chorus of simply 'Our God Reigns' over and over again, this one was an anthem.

Bind Us Together

A simple melody made this one a primary school favourite. "Bind us together, Lord. Bind us together, Lord with chords that cannot be broken".

Be Still

This was always a popular song "Be still for the presence of the Lord, the holy one is here".

Take me Lord

This one was a little less light hearted than some hymns, but was still popular at assemblies.

In case you've forgotten this beauty it goes "Take me Lord, use my life in the way you wish to do".

All over the World

Moving on to two more upbeat numbers. "All Over the World the spirit is moving', even had some actions thrown in for good measure.

Abba Father

This anthem was always a good one to end on for its joyful nature. It's simple "Abba Father, send your spirit! Glory Jesus Christ! over and over.
