Richard M. Sherman, the songwriting legend who helped bring some of the great Disney songs to life, died on Saturday at the age of 95, per The Walt Disney Company.
Sherman, along with his brother Robert B. Sherman, composed some of the most recognizable tunes in Disney’s history, including classic songs for the film Marry Poppins (for which he won two Academy Awards) and The Jungle Book.
They also composed songs featured in Disney parks and other family films like Charlotte’s Web and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Robert B. Sherman died in 2012.
“Richard Sherman was the embodiment of what it means to be a Disney Legend, creating along with his brother Robert the beloved classics that have become a cherished part of the soundtrack of our lives,” Disney CEO Bob Iger shared in a statement.
“From films like Mary Poppins and The Jungle Book to attractions like ‘it’s a small world,’ the music of the Sherman Brothers has captured the hearts of generations of audiences. We are forever grateful for the mark Richard left on the world, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family.”
A documentary about the Sherman Brothers, The Boys: The Sherman Brothers’ Story, was released in 2009. The film is streaming on Disney+.
