That time there was a dodgy safe on the local oval

There's a lot of things you might expect to find on your local neighbourhood oval early on a Sunday morning.

Some left over, chewed-up tennis balls. Maybe some takeaway rubbish that's blown over from the carpark. A jacket forgotten from soccer the day before.

But a safe? And a safe with a big hole in its side? Like someone has either blown it up or taken to it with a crowbar? Right in the middle of the oval?

Well, that's what happened last Sunday in Wanniassa.

DOG WALKERS FIND A SURPRISE

The large safe surprised early-morning walkers and dog exercisers on the Wanniassa playing fields off Sternberg Crescent, last Sunday, September 22.

What initially looked like a box, was soon found to be a First Alert-branded safe, billed as being both waterproof and fire-resistant.

The safe had obviously been violently attacked in some manner, with a large hole gouged in its side.

There is no confirmation yet on how thieves got into the safe. Picture supplied

There was no indication what had been in the safe or where it had come from.

It had been dumped in the middle of the oval.

ACT Policing was alerted by passers-by.

IS NO ONE MISSING A LARGE SAFE?

And this is where the tale gets curious and curiouser.

Seems no one is missing a safe.

No-one. Zip.

Almost like whoever owned the safe didn't actually want to engage with the police.

FURTHER FORENSIC EXAMINATION

ACT Policing is investigating.

"The safe was seized by police and has been sent off for further forensic examination," an ACT Policing spokesperson said.

"Enquiries are ongoing to confirm the rightful owner of the safe."

It's understood there have been no recent reports to police of a missing safe that matches its description.

There was no indication yet how the thieves had put the hole in the safe.
