'That shouldn't be happening' — Ian Wright flags familiar Manchester United vs Brighton

Manchester United have been told they will continue to have problems with teams like Brighton until they address their glaring problem in midfield.

Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes handed United the three points in the rearranged Premier League game against the Seagulls on Tuesday night — but they were given a helping hand along the way.

Following a goalless opening 45 minutes, it was Ronaldo who seized the initiative by ending his six-game goal drought with a stunning strike that flew past Robert Sanchez.

Brighton captain Lewis Dunk was sent off before the net had barely had time to stop rippling, with Fernandes adding a second deep into added time.

The Manchester Evening News understands key figures in the United boardroom will prioritise strengthening their midfield options during the summer transfer window — and Ian Wright believes it's a must if they're to compete with the best in the league.

Speaking to Premier League Productions, former Arsenal striker Wright said: "Until they get the midfield sorted so they can control the game they're going to have problems. Brighton, even with 10 men, were causing them issues and that shouldn't be happening at Old Trafford."

Wright was joined on the panel by ex-United favourite Andy Cole.

He added: "In the second half Brighton were slack in giving Man United the chance to win with Lewis Dunk getting sent off. United huffed and puffed and they needed the result, but it's not the best performance."
