President Donald Trump recently revealed that he thought about renaming the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of Trump,” but decided against it because it would not go over well with people. He made this comment during an interview on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures. After making the remark with apparent seriousness, he quickly told the interviewer that he was only joking.
In his words, the US has 93% of the shoreline. However, data from the US Geological Survey shows that the United States actually controls about 46% of the Gulf’s shoreline. Either way, Trump had already signed an executive order on his first day back in office to officially rename the body of water the Gulf of America, and his administration even criticized the Associated Press for not using the new name, reports the New York Post.
