Thane man arrested with 276 cough syrup bottles

THANE: The Mumbra police arrested a 48-year-old man with 276 cough syrup bottles which were to be illegally sold to addicts.

The police arrested the accused - Abdul Samad alias Guddi Shaikh (49), a resident of Jeevanbaug area of Thane's Mumbra.

Based on a tip-off to the assistant inspector Krupali Borse, that the accused had stocked cough syrups at the specific location, a raid was carried out.

Upon carrying out the search, the police found high power cough syrup stashed in the bags which was to be illegally sold to the addicts, Borse informed.

The police said that the cost of the total seizure was nearly Rs 36,168 according to the market price but they are definitely sold well above the prescribed MRP, the officer informed.

The officials suspect that they might have procured the syrups from various sources.

The police said that the cough syrup is locally named as ‘Batla’- due its cylindrical shape.

An offence has been registered at the Mumbra police station under relevant sections of Drugs and Cosmetics Act and other sections of Indian Penal Code.
