‘Thalai Kuthal’ bags first prize in Nagpur round of state drama fest

NAGPUR: Play ‘Thalai Kuthal’ based on the traditional practice of senicide (killing of the elderly) by their own family members, observed in some parts of Tamil Nadu, won first prize in the Nagpur divisional round of the 60th Maharashtra State Marathi Theatre Festival.

Produced by Tanmayi Multipurpose Society in Nagpur, the play won three other prizes too along with best director first to its writer-director Salim Sheikh. ‘Pahatecha Mrutyu’ presented by Ambhruni Seva Sanstha won the second prize. Both the plays will represent Nagpur centre in the state-level final round likely to be conducted in June.

The divisional round of the drama festival was held at Scientific Society Hall from February 21 to March 22. Director of the state directorate of cultural affairs Bibhishan Chaware declared the results on March 23. Theatre activists Shekhar Bhagwat, Shashikant Chaudhari and Gajanan Karale were the judges.
