The Thailand Clean Air Network (Thailand CAN) has launched a video campaign titled #TheAirYouBreatheMatters to raise public awareness of the impact of air pollution and garner support for draft legislation, that once implemented, will hold polluters accountable.
In collaboration with Plan B Media, Thailand CAN has released the video campaign on digital screens in key Bangkok locations, including Sathon Road, Makkasan intersection and Central Lardprao, multimedia screens and point-of-sale platforms in convenience stores. It will run until the end of this month.
Thailand lacks a regulatory body and a clean air law. In 1952, after thick smog claimed up to 12,000 lives in London, the UK passed the clean air act in 1956. Singapore, the Philippines and Malaysia followed suit. In early 2022, Thailand CAN tabled a clean air bill to parliament, but it has been under review due to a lack of public support.
Many studies point out the impact of this invisible killer. It is the cause of early death of over 50,000 Thais per year. People die two years earlier due to the quality of air being lower than the WHO guideline, but the figure goes up to three years in the North. Visit and sign a petition at thailandcan.org
