TfL seeks designs for new fleet of Croydon trams with air-con and charging points

Transport for London (TfL) has begun its search for a manufacturer to design a new fleet of trams to replace the oldest ones operating on the capital’s trams network.

TfL said 24 new air-conditioned trams will be built as it invites manufacturers to submit designs. It has issued an Invitation to Tender for bidders already.

The trams are to replace those used for nearly a quarter of a century which are now both “reaching the end of their design life and are becoming less reliable”.

The new fleet is expected to offer a redesigned interior, air-conditioning, audio and visual real-time travel information and mobile device charging points.

There would also be a multi-use area designated primarily for wheelchair users.

The transport body said the next generation of trams will be introduced towards the end of the decade, subject to funding. Four pre-qualified manufacturers can proceed to the next stage of the formal procurement process.

Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon, said of the tram service operating in Croydon and surrounding areas of south east London: “We welcome this positive news from TfL regarding a proposed new fleet of trams which will help support our borough’s regeneration.

“An improved and more reliable service will benefit our residents and everyone who visits and works in Croydon, as they commute around the borough for work and leisure.

"Croydon's trams are a vital piece of infrastructure, connecting remote areas to our town centre.

“We look forward to seeing this proposed fleet introduced and hope to see longer-term investment secured for the system, providing improved transport links and a welcome boost to the regeneration of our town centre and our local economy."

TfL is currently in discussions with the Government over its capital funding requirements, including for fleet renewals.
