TfL issues over 900 refunds after drivers wrongly charged for Ulez camera placed outside of zone

Over 900 drivers were incorrectly charged by a Ultra Low Emission Zone (Ulez) camera which had been put in the wrong place.

The motorists were angry after being charged when they were picked up by a camera while driving through Harrow’s Old Redding Junction, which is outside the Ulez border.

Transport for London(TfL) had to temporarily switch off the camera and reposition it so it was only filming drivers within the zone.

It said 927 people were incorrectly charged through auto payment accounts and have been refunded.

The ultra-low emission zone was expanded to outer London in August, leaving motorists in all 32 boroughs whose vehicle did not meet emission standards facing a £12.50 charge per day to drive within the boundary.

Deputy Harrow council leader Marilyn Ashton, who received a high level of complaints about the charges, said: “I do not even go to as far as the supermarket without hearing about it ... It’s a disgrace. Incompetence.

“People have been photographed, unfortunately, driving along Old Redding and turning left into Common Road. A lady was telling me she had been fined £12.50 and she couldn’t understand why because she was driving on a non-ULEZ road.”

TfL have assured that cameras on the London boundary have been checked and confirmed all cameras are now correctly positioned.

A TfL spokesperson said: “We apologise for this error. Unfortunately this camera was incorrectly positioned. It was switched off once we were informed of the error and has been repositioned. We have refunded any charges that were wrongly issued.”
