Texas woman who left landlords with urine bottles and unpaid rent for 25 years is headed to prison for 20 years

The legal boundary between tenant protections and property rights has long been a source of frustration in American real estate. But a case out of Texas has put a spotlight on how those protections can allegedly be exploited by people looking to take advantage of property owners.

According to Globe, Heather Ruybal, who has been described by various legal professionals as a “serial squatter,” has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in Dallas, Texas. Her conviction brings an end to a decades-long scheme in which she allegedly defrauded property owners, leaving some of them with major financial losses and damaged homes.
