A Texas woman has been formally charged with attempted capital murder and causing bodily injury to a child after she attempted to drown a three-year-old girl and hurt her six-year-old brother. The incident, which occurred in May, has been classified as a hate crime due to the woman's alleged targeting of the children because of their Muslim faith.
Elizabeth Wolf, 42, was indicted by a Tarrant County grand jury on August 15 for the attacks that took place at an apartment pool in Euless, Texas. According to reports, Wolf was intoxicated when she approached a Palestinian woman wearing a hijab and her two children at the pool.
Witnesses stated that Wolf made racial statements before grabbing the woman's six-year-old son, scratching him, and then forcibly submerging the three-year-old girl underwater in the pool. The children were able to physically recover from the ordeal, but the incident has left a lasting impact on the family.
The hate crime enhancement included in the indictment highlights the fact that Wolf's actions were motivated by the victims' religious background. This enhancement could result in a longer sentence for Wolf if she is convicted of the charges brought against her.
Wolf is currently being held in the Tarrant County Jail on a $1 million bond as she awaits further legal proceedings. The community has been shocked by the disturbing nature of the attack and is hopeful that justice will be served for the innocent children who were targeted in this hate-fueled incident.
