A recent ruling by a Texas court has mandated that Kaitlin Armstrong, who was found guilty of murdering pro cyclist Anna Moriah 'Mo' Wilson, must pay $15 million to the victim's family. The tragic incident occurred in May 2022 in an East Austin home, where Armstrong shot Wilson twice in the head and once through the heart.
Wilson's parents, Karen and Eric Wilson, sought justice by filing a wrongful death lawsuit against Armstrong, requesting over $1 million in relief. The court awarded a default judgment in favor of the Wilsons when Armstrong failed to appear at a court hearing and neglected to respond to the lawsuit.
During the trial, it was revealed that Armstrong committed the heinous act out of jealousy, as Wilson had gone on a date with Armstrong's former boyfriend, Colin Strickland. Armstrong, aged 37, was convicted of murder and handed a 90-year prison sentence, with the possibility of parole after serving 30 years.
Prosecutors presented evidence that Armstrong had stalked Wilson's movements using the Strava app, which tracks cyclists' routes. Additionally, Armstrong had unauthorized access to Strickland's digital accounts, enabling her to monitor his communications.
In addition to the $15 million awarded to the Wilsons, the court ordered Armstrong to pay $5 million to each parent and an additional $5 million in exemplary damages to deter similar actions in the future. The ruling also stipulated that the Wilsons could claim post-judgment interest of 8.5% per year, along with all taxable court costs.
This case serves as a sobering reminder of the devastating consequences of unchecked jealousy and violence, highlighting the importance of seeking justice for victims and their families in the face of such senseless tragedies.
