Texas-bound American Airlines flight lands in Glasgow after declaring emergency

A Texas-bound plane has landed in Glasgow after issuing an emergency code.

The American Airlines flight, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, was flying from Frankfurt to Dallas on Sunday when crews declared an emergency by signalling a Squawk 7700.

A Squawk 7700 code is used to communicate on-flight emergencies and, depending on the nature and severity of the situation, crews may conduct checks before formally declaring an emergency.

The nature of this incident is not known.

In a map on Flight Radar, the aircraft can be seen departing Germany at 10.50am, and flying over the Netherlands and the North Sea.

It reached the Orkney isles before taking a sharp U-turn and flying south towards Glasgow.

The plane has landed in Glasgow and is expected to depart from there at 2pm.

American Airlines and Glasgow Airport was contacted for comment.
