Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced that state authorities are actively participating in the search for a person of interest in the ambush shooting of a Houston-area deputy. The incident resulted in the tragic death of Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Fernando Esqueda, a 28-year-old and five-year veteran of the force.
The manhunt is focused on Ronnie Palmer, 44, who is wanted in connection with the shooting of Deputy Esqueda. Palmer is also a suspect in an aggravated assault case at a Little Ceasar's pizzeria in East Harris County.
Authorities reported that Deputy Esqueda was ambushed while on the phone with another detective. His vehicle was found riddled with bullet holes in the early hours of the morning, and despite being rushed to the hospital in critical condition, he succumbed to his injuries.
Chief Deputy Mike Lee described Deputy Esqueda as a member of an elite task force that specializes in pursuing dangerous criminals, including child rapists and homicide suspects. Governor Abbott expressed his full support for local law enforcement in their efforts to apprehend the gunman, emphasizing that violence against law enforcement officers will not be tolerated in Texas.
State troopers and special agents are assisting in the manhunt for Palmer, and the community has been urged to come together in prayer and support for Deputy Esqueda's family and colleagues. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez vowed to bring the perpetrator to justice and emphasized the devastating impact of the loss on the entire Harris County community.
