INDIANAPOLIS — Davis Mills is the only quarterback for the Houston Texans.
Naturally the Texans aren’t rolling into the 2023 campaign with Mills as the lone signal caller on the roster, and general manager Nick Caserio addressed the team’s situation at quarterback at the NFL combine.
“We’re really looking at the entire team building process, so we’ve started with our team,” Caserio said. “We’ve had [coach] DeMeco (Ryans) and his staff to have an opportunity to look at our team.”
Caserio admitted the club will use a variety of resources to try to help out the quarterback situation.
“We know we’re going to add to this position,” said Caserio. “We have one player on the roster currently. I would say it’s probably going to be a combination of the draft, two free agency. It could be two, however it goes.”
The Texans may use free agency to add another veteran quarterback if they believe Mills is not cut out to handle the backup duties. The former 2021 third-rounder from Stanford has his shot in the 2022 campaign to prove his mettle as a starter, but posted a 3-11-1 mark and a 78.8 passer rating in the process.
To replace Mills as the long-term answer under center, Houston is expected to look to the 2023 NFL draft where the club holds the No. 2 overall pick. With the Chicago Bears at No. 1 overall not in the market for a quarterback thanks to Justin Fields embarking on his third season, Houston is still in the best spot to take the first quarterback off the board.
Nevertheless quarterback, as vital of a position as it is in today’s NFL, is just one of a dozen positions the Texans will have to evaluate to improve upon their 3-13-1 record and post something other than a double-digit losing season for the first time since 2019.
Said Caserio: “We’re going to look at whatever resources we have available to us, try to make the right decision. But really it’s about the total team building process. It’s not really about one position. We’re going to be very thoughtful, and we’re going to take our time to try and make good decisions all throughout the spring.”
The Texans are tied with the Kansas City Chiefs for the most picks in the draft with 12.
