The Houston Texans’ plan at running back might not just involve one player.
There are multiple scenarios that the team could explore this offseason which include signing more than one running back, according to KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson. One of these ideas is to re-sign and pair impending free agent Devin Singletary with another rusher rather than pay for one star like Saquon Barkley or Josh Jacobs.
“Having two viable running backs is an option the Texans strongly desire,” Wilson wrote, “after former starter Dameon Pierce regressed in his second NFL season.”
Wilson named the Philadelphia Eagles’ D’Andre Swift or the Dallas Cowboys’ Tony Pollard as potential options. Tennessee Titans star Derrick Henry could be another after the Texans were linked to him earlier this offseason. Reading between the lines of Wilson’s report – it doesn’t sound like the Texans would draft a running back with their early picks.
Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans talked about improving the running game after the Texans finished 22nd in rushing yards and 29th in yards per attempt in 2023. A stable running back is crucial for the development of a young quarterback and for any team looking to make a deep postseason run.
Ryans likes Singletary as a player, though, so the idea of bringing him back sounds like a legitimate option so long as Houston adds a complementary rusher alongside him. Singletary led the Texans with 898 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns.
This also casts doubt on Pierce’s future with the team after the former 2022 fourth-rounder did not enjoy a good second season.
