The Houston Texans may have found their quarterback in Davis Mills, but nothing will come easy for the 2021 third-rounder from Stanford.
Coach Lovie Smith told Albert Breer from Sports Illustrated’s MMQB that Mills played just as well as fellow rookies Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, and Trey Lance, and that the club is hopeful with Mills spending year two in Pep Hamilton’s system.
“Everyone wants to talk about the quarterback, I like him,” Smith said. I like his demeanor, how smart he is, and I like that he and Pep Hamilton have been together for a year already. Those things should help us. Got a chance to see Brandin Cooks and guys like that, and know exactly who they are. And the foundation that we put in place on the defensive side, our system is already in.”
While Smith may like Mills, the starting job is still up for grabs as far as the organization is concerned.
“We don’t give out starting positions in the spring, to anybody,” Smith said.
The Texans do not have a quarterback under contract as quarterback Tyrod Taylor is set to be a free agent. Jeff Driskel, who converted from quarterback to tight end, will also be a free agent when the new league year starts March 15.
